Who is responsible for sustainable procurement?

  • All government officers and management

  • All government officers and management play a role in integrating sustainable procurement by managing demand, rethinking needs and implementing strategies to avoid unnecessary consumption.

  • Procurement officers

  • Government procurement officers play a key role in furthering sustainable procurement. By considering the social and environmental impacts associated with purchasing decisions, officers can reduce negative social and environmental outcomes, and also assist in achieving cost savings.

  • Strategic procurement officers

  • Strategic Procurement Officers are responsible for analysing the agency issues and setting sustainable procurement targets and developing implementation plans. By considering key areas of spend and the key sustainable procurement impacts, strategic procurement officers should aim to continually improve the agency's sustainable procurement performance. A key role is to build sustainable procurement capability within the agency.

  • Senior executives

  • In order for an agency to embed sustainability into its procurement it is essential that senior executives actively support and endorse the sustainable procurement policy and implementation strategy. An explicit statement of commitment to sustainable procurement principles and policies should come from senior executives and be communicated to staff and suppliers.
