What can purchasers do to buy green?

One of the major barriers to buying green is that government purchasers are generally not aware of products and services having an environmental impact. This is slowly changing with more people becoming aware of the availability of green products. Consumers are increasingly demanding to know what the product is made from, how the product is made, the packaging it comes in and the reputation of the manufacturer. Many Queenslanders use 'green bags' for shopping (rather than plastic), consider the energy ratings on white goods, recycle waste in kerbside wheelie bins or recycle stations. There is no reason why these environmentally conscious behaviours can't transfer to the workplace and to government buying practices.

Queensland Government agencies are being encouraged to implement a range of sustainable procurement activities to support purchasers to buy green.

Government purchasers have the power to make a real difference to the environment. There are a number of activities that purchasers can do to buy green.
