Definitions

In terms of the Queensland Government's State Procurement Policy, sustainable procurement means that when buying goods and services, consideration is given to the following:

This aligns with the definition adopted in the Australian Procurement and Construction Council Inc (APCC), which has developed The Australian and New Zealand Government Framework for Sustainable Procurement . The framework developed by the APCC is a set of principles designed to guide the Australian and New Zealand governments in implementing sustainable procurement.

The United Kingdom Government and the Marrakech Task Force on Sustainable Public Procurement defines sustainable procurement as:

"Sustainable procurement is a process whereby organisations meet their needs for goods, services, works and utilities in a way that achieves value for money on a whole life basis in terms of generating benefits not only to the organisation, but also to society and the economy, whilst minimising damage to the environment"1 .
