Queensland Government Chief Procurement Office has completed a broad review of the sector’s desktop printing practices and the recommended actions coming out of this review have been approved by the Whole of Government Services Integration Committee (WoGSIC). Along the way, a number of inefficient print practices and purchases were identified.
Key recommendations are:
The intention is to provide agencies and SSPs with information and assistance to enable them to achieve substantial savings as well as increased efficiencies in their desktop printing activities. Organisations which have been through these exercises have typically found savings between 10-25%.
For the purpose of this review, desktop printing is considered to be all forms of local printing from the desktop. Typically, the print jobs will be for relatively small amounts which are required on an ad hoc basis in A4 and A3 formats.
Queensland Government Chief Procurement Office has developed SOA 650 Panel of Providers for Desktop Print Solutions to assist agenices and SSPs to undertake print reviews in order to establish desktop printing strategies.
A desktop printing strategy identifies the optimal mix of hardware to suit the demand and profile of government agencies.

A new useful fact sheet on toner cartridges provides information to assist buyers in determining their best option when buying toner. With the increasing availability and cost effectiveness of remanufactured toner cartridges many buyers are reassessing their toner purchases in search of better value.
Some buyers are unsure how to best compare the value of original toner cartridges with what is on offer from the remanufactured brands. It is important for the buyers to determine which product provides the best value for money on a long term basis without compromising printing quality.

There are a number of key opportunities to save money on your office supplies expenditure. One opportunity can be realised by identifying high usage and critical items of supply and developing a fixed catalogue or basket of goods. Queensland Government Chief Procurement Office has developed through consultation with key agencies and Shared Service Providers (SSPs) a sample basket of office supplies. The sample basket is designed to reflect the majority of items that would be used in a typical administrative environment and specialist items should be included. The Government Office Supplies Range or (GOSR) has 406 individual items allocated to 13 different categories, designed to assist agencies/SSPs to develop their own basket of goods for their office stationery arrangements. The GOSR is consistent with experience in other jurisdictions that indicates government agencies can successfully operate with a catalogue of less than 800 lines.
